“Well, that’s the good part I guess. You get to go find a new dream.”
"You were my new dream." "And you were mine."
“This is the story of how I died. Don’t worry, this is actually a very fun story and the truth is, it isn’t even mine. This is the story of a girl named Rapunzel, and it starts with the sun.”

“I’ve been looking out of a window for eighteen years, dreaming about what I might feel like when those lights rise in the sky. What if it’s not everything I dreamed it would be?”
So apparently everyone is mad for two reasons Anna looks just like Rapunzel and it lacks disney diversity. In my honest opinion, it doesn’t matter what the princess looks like. So first I’ll address the Rapunzel complaint. Rapunzel is German and Anna is Swedish (I’m pretty sure cause there’s a character in the movie names Sven which is Swedish) or Nordic if you want to call her that. I find German people look an awful lot like Nordics so wouldn’t you expect them to look like each other? And they’re not totally the same. Anna’s hair is a bit darker.
As for the diversity thing, who cares? This is Disney’s first Swedish princess which I think is going to be pretty cool. Since she’s from Sweden, I’d expect her to have light hair and blue eyes. Disney can not make a princess that fits everyone’s standards and wishes. You’re asking for quite a lot from them when you want something like that. You’re asking them to make an entire movie that fits your standards. Let Disney do their thing. Let them make their own movies and quit complaining. They’re not going to bend over backwards for you. I was on Walt Disney confessions on tumblr and I swear every single one of those was complaining about the lack of diversity and how upset people are with the characters appearance in Disney movies.
the idea that “nordics and germans look alike!! its not their fault!!!” may sound like it makes sense in theory but it doesnt in this case. disney is a corporation where their mascot is a talking mouse. a talking mouse who’s best friends are a damn duck and a dog.
nordics and germans may look alike in real life “so why wouldnt they look alike in fiction” but its not real life. there is so much they could do with these character designs, even keeping the main characters nordic, but they went and blew it by having the same boring ass character concept: young, lithe white woman with light eyes, a slender nose, and pointy chin, and light hair.
your argument for how anna and rapunzel dont look alike is “anna’s hair is darker” do you hear how weak that sounds. honestly?
out of all the countries in the world, all the different types of non-european cultures there are, civilizations that have rose and fallen outside of european countries, we’re still in europe and people. are. pissed.
because theyre not being represented and its complete bullshit!!
it is a big deal to people because people of color are not represented by the media, this includes disney. you say “just let disney do their thing!!” but as literally the leader in animation, character design, etc. it should be a priority of theirs to be diverse, for god’s sake, the fact that people of color are not represented in the media as well as they should be has a negative impact on poc, particularly children.
children are more likely to lean toward characters that look like them, especially if they are children of color and they barely have any representation in the first place. its not fair to little girls that are not white that are forced to pick between 8 white princesses and 3-4 (if you count pocahontas as a princess even though no one does) princesses that look even remotely like them.
its not fair, its not right, maybe 10 years ago it would have been ok (it wouldnt) but its 2013, disney’s first princess came out 76 years ago, we are WELL overdue for more characters of color and people have a ton of reasons to be angry about why its happening so slowly and why disney keeps going back to the same boring designs.
